The Alumni Association of the Department of Botany, University
of Calcutta has lately been reorganised through the initiative
of a few dedicated and energetic Botanists who sincerely
feel that the Alumni of this department should play a distinct
role in the recurrence of Plant Sciences in recent years.
The Association is indeed grateful to Professor N. D. Paria,
the Head of the Department of Botany for providing a suitable
space for this Association which is responsible for giving
some sort of stability to the Association.
The Alumni Association has been meeting periodically through
the Reunion of the Past and Present students of this Department,
and Reunion function is held every year since its inception
more than six decades back. The latter undoubtedly serves
its purpose of reviving the relationship, exchange of pleasantries
and recounting the sweet memories of the past. However,
the reunion for obvious reasons, remains to a great extent
limited to the present and recently passed ex-students,
excepting a few old alumni. Needless to say that alumnus
of this department is distributed all over the globe mostly
in academic and through their activities, they are continuously
bringing glory to their alma mater.
One of the urgent tasks that the reorganised Association
has undertaken is to propose a directory of our alumni -
citing their complex address including all means of communication.
There is still not a comprehensive directory of all alumni.
As such, this activity is to be treated on a priority basis.
The cooperation of the entire spectrum of our alumni is
imperative in this regard.
As at present, the Association wants to involve itself
deeply with the Annual Reunion Function which would keep
on strengthening the bond between the past and present students
on a continuous basis.
Simultaneously, it is desired to publish a Newsletter highlighting
the activities of the Alumni in whatever sphere he/she is
engaged in any part of India or abroad. The challenges and
constraints which the plant scientists face are also mandated
within the activities of the essential. I wish, this newsletter,
the mouthpiece of the alumni with successfully fulfill its
With best wishes to you all,
